Loudoun Zoning Changed To Restrict Parking Vehicles In Yards
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors has voted to approve amendments to the Zoning Ordinance that place restrictions on the parking of vehicles in yards in certain residential districts in the county.
The new restrictions, which also limit paved parking surface areas within yards, apply to single-family, detached dwellings on lots in certain residential and planned development-housing zoning districts. The new regulations will be incorporated into the existing Section 5-800 of the Zoning Ordinance, Limitations on Vehicles in Residential Districts.
During the Potomac-Sterling Outreach Project, which began in 2008, many residents expressed concern about the number of vehicles being parked in front yards on paved and unpaved surfaces, the portion of front yards being paved, and the storage of inoperable vehicles.
In July 2009, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution of intent to amend the Zoning Ordinance and Facilities Standards Manual, as necessary, to restrict the practice of parking vehicles in yards and unpaved surfaces and limit the amount of paved parking surface permitted in yards. Following adoption of the resolution, the proposed restrictions were the subject of a Planning Commission public hearing and two worksessions, and a Board of Supervisors public hearing. The restrictions were also considered by the Board’s Transportation/Land Use Committee.
