Loudoun Schools Start September 7th
Loudoun County’s 79 public schools open Tuesday, September 7th, expecting an estimated 63,353 students for the 2010-2011 school year. This year will begin with doors opening at two new high schools and the county’s first modern two-story elementary school.
The three new schools feature sustainable design, green construction practices, increased energy efficiency and new educational technology.

New Principals
Dual principals for Adie and Middleburg elementary schools and Hillsboro and Lincoln elementary schools were enacted for the 2010-2011 school year because of budget constraints. In addition to the added responsibilities for the two dual principals, LCPS welcomes the following new principals for the 2010-2011 school year:
- · Algonkian Elementary: Jennifer A. Steeprow, former assistant principal at Meadowland Elementary.
· Broad Run High School: Douglas A. Anderson, former assistant principal at Broad Run High School.
· Buffalo Trail Elementary: Alisa A. Rogaliner, former assistant principal at Sycolin Creek Elementary.
· Hutchison Farm Elementary: Heidi E. Latham, former principal at Algonkian Elementary.
· Tuscarora High School: Pamela Paul-Jacobs, former assistant principal at Broad Run High School.
· Waterford Elementary: Dr. Ricardy J. Anderson, former director of teaching & learning for the District of Columbia Public Schools.
LCPS Welcomes 353 New Teachers
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) welcomed 353 new teachers to its ranks during new teacher orientation on Friday, August 20th, at Heritage High School.
Some facts about the incoming group of teachers:
- · 46 are Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) graduates;
· The most common female name among the new teachers is Katherine/Catherine;
· The most common male name is Jonathan/John;
· One of the new teachers came from Hawaii and another is coming from Hungary as part of a Fulbright exchange;
· All four of the new Visiting International Faculty (VIF) teachers come from Colombia;
· 67 of the new teachers are special education teachers;
· 289 are female;
· 64 are male;
· There were three sets of siblings among the new teachers;
· There were five married couples among the new teachers;
· Seven substitute teachers who were named Substitute of the Year by an LCPS school in 2009-2010 have been hired full-time for 2010-2011; four as teachers,two as teacher assistants andone as a school nurse assistant.
788 School Buses on the Road by 6:30 a.m.
As early as 6:30 a.m. on September 7th, 788 LCPS school buses will begin traveling the county’s roadways delivering more than 60,000 students to their first day of school. Throughout the 2010-2011 school year, these buses are expected to travel more than 9 million miles. LCPS Transportation Director, Alvin E. Hampton IV reminds drivers each year to watch for school busses picking up children and to be aware of children walking or biking to school. Virginia law requires all vehicles to stop for school buses loading and unloading students.
LCPS Web Domain Name Changed
On Wednesday, September 1st, LCPS will officially start doing business as lcps.org instead of loudoun.k12.va.us. The name domain name was changed to provide a shorter name that is easier to spell.
Both domain names will remain active. This means that e-mail sent to the loudoun.k12.va.us address after the switch will continue to be delivered. (Any outbound responses will be from the lcps.org address.)

Student Enrollment Continues to Increase Even in Slow Economy
The largest elementary school class during the 2010-11 school year will be first grade with 5,395 students. The largest middle school class will be 4,756 students in the sixth grade. The largest high school class is the freshmen class with 4,598 members.
The Class of 2011 will be made up of 3,922 seniors enrolled in 10 of the county’s 12 high schools, compared to the 2,177 members of this class who entered the first day of kindergarten in 1998 (a 56 percent increase). In 1998, the LCPS enrollment was 26, 091 and Loudoun County Public Schools had 44 school facilities.
Criterion Change for Excellence in Education Banquet
Because of the implementation of a 10-point grading scale and additional weighting for honors and Advanced Placement classes, the criterion for students honored at the annual Excellence in Education Banquet will change for 2010.
Beginning this year, seniors honored at the banquet will be in the top 5 percent of the class academically at their school. Students will continue to be honored if they are a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, a National Achievement Scholarship semifinalist or a Hispanic Achievement Scholar.
The 2010 Excellence in Education Banquet will be held on Sunday, November 14th, at the National Conference Center.
Public Invited to School Board Meeting and Budget Hearings
The School Board meets monthly in open session in the School Board Meeting Room at the LCPS Administration Building, 21000 Education Court, Ashburn 20148. Meetings are on the second and fourth Tuesdays with the exception of December, July and August when no fourth Tuesday meetings are scheduled. Loudoun residents are encouraged to attend and participate in meetings and budget hearings. Agendas are available on LCPS Web site (http://www.lcps.org/) under Board Docs. Those who wish to speak at a School Board Meeting or Budget Hearing may call 571-252-1020 to have their names placed on the speakers’ list in advance of the meeting. Interested speakers may also add their names to the list at the time of the meeting.
