Leesburg Ladies Tennis Team Aces Local Competitions

Ida Lee Park Tennis Center’s 2.5 Ladies Team has captured a slot at the 2010 United States Tennis Association (USTA) League’s Adult National Championship, to be held October 1-3, 2010, at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.

Sponsored by the Town of Leesburg’s Parks & Recreation Department, the team members are coaches Korey Suk and Moses Gittens, captain Ellen Wyly, and players Jennifer Culko, Susan Gorman, Kathy Horne, Jen Kaine, Jennifer Pearson, Christine Sequino, Nicole Sicre and Eve Webber.

USTA League is the country’s largest recreational tennis league, organized as competitive team match play. Teams and matches are set up according National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) rating categories so that teammates and their opponents have similar skill levels. The ratings are based on a scale from 1.0 (player is just starting to play tennis) to 7.0 (player makes his/her living from tournament prize money).

Considered “underdogs” at the USTA Virginia District Championship, held July 15-18, 2010, in Norfolk, the Leesburg ladies team qualified as a wildcard for the Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championship. The team followed that performance by going undefeated at the Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championship, held August 14-15, 2010 in Virginia Beach, to win their berth in the National Championship.

“The whole team has been working very hard all season,” said Moses Gittens, Ida Lee’s Head Tennis Pro. “If they continue to play the same level of tennis that has brought them this far, they can win at the national level.”

I am a Californian and an accomplished Tennis player. I am completely thrilled to know that It will be possible to see my fantastic daughter in law, Nicole Sicre play in Rancho Mirage, whom is a native Virginian, and whom I will be able to watch in my own backyard. Viva Nicole.
