Heritage High School Makes $1,000-Plus Donation to Yellow Ribbon Fund
Heritage High School The first-year History Honor Society at Heritage High School undertook a project this fall to honor some Americans currently making history.
Society members sold $1 stars on a Wall of Honor through which their fellow students could honor a veteran close to them. As an added incentive, those who donated were given Mardi Gras beads.
On Tuesday, November 16th, the Heritage students turned over the fruits of their labor –– $1,041.94 –– to Mark Robbins, the executive director of the Yellow Ribbon Fund.
Created in 2005, the Yellow Ribbon Fund assists injured service members and their families while they recuperate at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center. The Yellow Ribbon Fund provides hotels, apartments, airline tickets, rental cars and amenities (cab vouchers, tickets to sporting events and concerts) to families whose loved ones are undergoing long-term care and rehabilitation.
“”We see a lot of kids, late teens, early 20''s……,”” said Robbins. “”The injured we see; chances are, if they''re coming to Walter Reed, they2''ve lost a limb. The injuries are really serious. Their stay at the hospital is really long. What we try to do is keep the family unit together……
“”We like to fill the gaps. The military can''t do everything.””
Through the years, the Yellow Ribbon Fund has provided 1,100 free rental cars spanning 49,000 free rental car days; more than 16,000 free taxi rides; and more than 7,300 free hotel room nights.
Heritage''s History Honor Society was founded by social sciences teacher Andrea Schlegel. Schlegel, who previously taught at Potomac Falls High School, said the Wall of Honor project was inspired by a similar project by her former colleague, Jim Chrisman, at Potomac Falls. “”This was our first big service project.””
Schlegel said planning for this project became more important to her when she learned in August that one of her former students had been wounded in Afghanistan.
